Some voices consider I4.0 to be another "buzzword" that will lose its meaning over time and fall into oblivion. We should acknowledge that I4.0 raised enormous expectations. The implementation? That still is a big unknown.
Surely, I4.0 creates the awareness of necessary changes in industrial automation, which until this point remained obscure. It aims to utilize the benefits of IT that have not yet entered the automation industry. Manufacturing companies should expect a wave of innovation, and their ability to adapt will either make or break them.
Inxton comes from a company that has been producing assembly lines for more than 20 years. We have observed this trend closely from its emergence into the latter stages. During this time, we have developed thousands of machines and concluded that the leading factor for the success or failure of Industry 4.0 would be a shift from electrical engineering to software engineering. The key to this evolution is the PLC control systems themselves; their transformation, and the full utilization of information technology.
